Kennel Design
Though we do residential, commercial, and even industrial projects, our focus is designing kennels. Any architect or designer can plan a building to accommodate dogs. One way we differ is, we talk to people who work in the kennel industry every day. In talking with these clients over the years, we have learned that to be efficient the workflow of the building must match the way the people within the building work. The building must also be easily cleaned.
Most of the kennels we design are for HoundQuarters--we are their exclusive designer. HoundQuarters buildings are engineered specifically for use as a kennel. The materials used are impervious to water; conventional materials are not. The constant moisture in a kennel will rot wood products quickly. Concrete and masonry products are porous, and they will absorb water and urine leading to odor, bacteria, and mold. Even if the framing is protected by a waterproof surface, water has a way of getting in over time. Painted-on epoxy finishes can get chipped, grout fractures, and masonry cracks and then is difficult or impossible to seal completely, allowing for moisture to get where it can not be cleaned.
HoundQuarters uses hot-dipped galvanized structural steel for the building’s frame. Inside the kennel, the stall walls consist of an aluminum frame in-filled with an FRP (Fiber Reinforced Plastic) panel. A standard kennel stall front has an aluminum frame with an aluminum grill. Solid bottom Dutch doors are available that prevent dogs from seeing each other. Tempered glass doors are also available. All these materials can withstand the constant abuse of moisture, the abuse of the dogs, and the abuse of the staff, and are all easily cleaned.
Outside, the exterior of the building is also able to withstand moisture and the elements. The finish material is HardiPanel®, that has a 50 year warranty from the manufacturer, and which is a very stable siding that is delivered primed and painted in a color of your choosing.
These buildings are kennels--inside and out. We will work with you each step of the way to design your new facility in the way you work.
